Racer Upgrades and Most Improved for 2007

At the end-of-year banquet recognition is given to the racers who have improved the most since last year. Here is a list of racers whose total improvement was at least 4 percent (when SL and GS improvements are added together). To be on the list, you must have at least 6 handicaps in each event this year and 6 in each event last year. (That is, 3 races in each event each year.)

Note: the changes shown are relative to your time. A -10 means you got 10% faster. In case it's not intuitively obvious, this is not exactly the same as the change in your handicap, because your handicap is relative to a reference racer with HC=0. If your old handicap was 50, then your time is 1.5 times longer than a racer with 0 HC. If you get 10% faster, then your new time is 1.35 (1.5 - 0.1*1.5 = 1.35) times the reference and your new handicap would be 35. Simple, eh?

Upgrades

Each weekend, racers whose average handicaps have dropped out of the minimum for their class are listed here. They are upgraded, after official approval at the following MACC meeting. The list here shows the handicap (HC), the minimum HC for the old class, and the new class for the racer. If you are not in the open Elite class, getting an upgrade is the ultimate honor in the MACC. Congratulations!

April 10, 2007. The handicaps have been been prepared for the 2008 season. Three of you ended the season with enough improvement to upgrade, starting the 2008 season in new classes.

MACC Handicaps

A handicap system is used to place MACC racers in appropriate ability classes, and to determine when racers should upgrade or downgrade to different classes.

Pacesetters

The handicaps are determined largely by past histories of most of the racers competing on a course. Pacesetters provide quality control, and influence the handicaps of racers who are much faster or much slower than the average racer for the course.

Calculating and Reporting Handicaps

Handicaps are computed for all race times. However, the handicaps shown in the results on a race day are subject to adjusment and are not considered "final" until after the first MACC meeting that follows the race.

Handicaps are calculated using different equations for the first and second run, in order to compensate for differing course conditions. Therefore, identical times on the first and second runs can result in different handicaps.
